How Democrats Have Ruined Election Day

On election day, 1980, my dad took me at 2 years old to walk a precinct to get out the vote for Ronald Reagan. In the first 7 presidential elections of my life, I continued the tradition and volunteered to go door-to-door, asking Republican households to go vote. Afterward, I would go home and eagerly watch the returns come in and races get called. Election day in the United States used to be fun. It was an event. To political nerds, it was like Super Bowl Sunday.

Unfortunately, election day is no fun anymore. Democrats have ruined it, like so many other things in America. This is not because the results of the midterm elections were disappointing. It has little to do with who wins or loses. It is about the mechanics of the election itself. There are four main reasons why that special Tuesday in November no longer holds the magic that it once did.

We don’t get results. – Back when there were VCRs, my parents tried to record the Alfred Hitchcock classic, North by Northwest. The only problem was that the tape cut off with Cary Grant hanging from Mount Rushmore, a literal cliffhanger. We had to wait until we could go to the video store and rent it to find out what happened. Nobody wants things left up in the air without a resolution. This is, sadly, how election day is now. We go to bed without knowing who won. It took a few days to find out who had won the Senate, and it took 10 days before we finally found out that Republicans had taken control of the House in last month’s midterms. That is partly because, after the 2000 election, nobody wants to call a race incorrectly and have to pull it back. However, the bigger culprit is that there has been an assault by the Democrats on election day itself for years. Now, there are mail-in ballots and ballots dropped off anonymously at drop-boxes, with at best, questionable authenticity, that take days to count. There is no good reason for this. For most of my lifetime, people voted in person on election day, and we had far more trustworthy and reliable results, and knew most of them on election night.

Early voting. – In many states, there is early voting for weeks prior to election day, before the campaigning is done. This means that if somebody is persuaded in the final weeks of the campaign after they cast a vote, they are out of luck. This also eliminates the ability of voters to take into account some late-discovered information about a candidate. For example, some people believe that the FBI’s reopening its investigation into Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton’s staff and their use of a private email server swung the election to President Donald Trump. Now, many people have already voted, so late-breaking information is too late.

News coverage is terrible. – Years ago, the media was biased in favor of the Democrats, but they generally tried not to turn off half of the country by openly and obviously attacking Republicans and rooting for the Democrats. Now, most of the television news coverage is so bad that it is unwatchable. On an election day when the Democrats had destroyed the economy, leading us to a plummeting stock market, massive inflation, and small businesses struggling to survive, the news coverage steered the conversation away from that and towards whatever sideshow they could come up with. One example was an interview by ABC news anchor David Muir with a moderate Republican, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, at his victory party after he won re-election. While Governor Sununu tried to focus on his supporters and his vision for New Hampshire and our country, Muir kept trying to segway into irrelevant things, like the 2020 election, and the media’s favorite target of hatred and vitriol, President Trump. It was uncomfortable to watch. The media will bend over backward to avoid any subject that will be damaging to Democrats, no matter how obvious. This election, the crumbling economy was the elephant in the room, but what you heard on election day was, “yeah, yeah, inflation, but what about so-and-so?” Every single one of you, whatever your political leanings, know that if the Republicans were in power with a bad economy, the media would be laser-focused on it. The last time the news was fun to watch on election day was in 2016, and not because the coverage was good, but because most of the “journalists” looked like they were about to burst into tears.

Distrust of the results and fear of cheating. – Whichever side you are on, you cannot deny that a large portion of the country does not trust our elections right now. This is a problem. When things are going poorly, people need to be able to vote out those in power. If they distrust our elections and feel like no matter how they vote, the elections are rigged, it leaves them backed into a corner with no other recourse except to fight in other, possibly less peaceful, ways. We need to restore accountability and faith in our elections. When I see a close race on election night, I get a sinking feeling, because I know that they will find enough ballots, however they do it, to make the Democrat win. I don’t trust the results, along with a whole lot of other people, and while there is an easy fix, Democrats refuse to do it because they don’t care if people have faith in our elections as long as they stay in power. If anybody honestly cares about preserving our democracy, they would want to alleviate these fears. Calling people “election deniers” and trying to vilify them does not work. Neither does saying, “you can’t prove fraud.” That is the point. Due to mail-in ballots and a refusal to verify voters with ID at polling places, there is nearly no way to prove fraud. That does not prove that cheating is not rampant. It just proves that we have no way of knowing how much cheating is happening. Instead of gaslighting people who have concerns about our election security, just prove to them that our elections are secure. It is actually very easy to do. Simply require voters to show ID when they cast their ballots, in person, on election day. If we do this, it makes it very difficult to cheat.

Election day can be fun again if we fix these four things. Hopefully, we can do it. If not, what is left for Democrats to try to ruin? Groundhog’s Day?

What Is Liberty?

The week before California’s recall election I had the privilege of meeting the world’s greatest athlete from 1976. That title was traditionally bestowed on the winner of the decathlon, and at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal Bruce Jenner won the gold medal for the United States while setting a new world record. In 2015 Bruce Jenner shocked the world in an interview with Diane Sawyer in which he told Sawyer that he was now a she. (Disclaimer: So as not to be a science denier I am using the scientifically correct gender pronouns in this article. That is not the focus of the article.) Jenner, who now goes by the name Caitlyn, ran in the California recall election as a Republican to replace the inept Governor Gavin Newsom. The Friday before election day Caitlyn Jenner was the guest speaker at a discussion group that I have been attending for the last couple of months.

Caitlyn’s talk was impressive. He was personable, friendly, and funny. Jenner said that after the Sawyer interview there was more criticism for coming out as a Republican than there was for coming out as transgender. Jenner also told a funny story about being in the weight room at the Olympics when a female East German athlete came in and started lifting heavier weights than him, ironically causing him to leave because he felt emasculated. Jenner genuinely cares about California and wants it returned to the greatness it once had. I did not expect much talk about actual policy positions, but Jenner has a pretty solid grasp of many of the problems Gavin Newsom and years of Democrat control have caused, including sky-high tax rates and backbreaking regulations. A lot of ideas that Jenner had to fix some of these problems were good, including a sunset provision which would require regulations to be reevaluated by the legislature every ten years or else they would fall off the books.

There was, however, one major point that Jenner made that stood out to me because it was based on a flawed premise. Jenner said that he decided to run because of his belief that California needs a moderate Republican to fix the state. Specifically, he said that people should vote for him because he is conservative on economic issues and more liberal on social issues. Jenner also said that the candidate that I endorsed, Larry Elder, is “far-right.” The premise of that argument ignores the fact that conservatism comes with a built-in solution to people disagreeing on social issues: liberty.

Jenner’s reasoning assumes that the choice you have is between voting for a left-wing government controlling your life or a right-wing government controlling your life. In actuality, the choice is between a left-wing government controlling your life or you controlling your life.

For example, as a conservative Republican, I believe that the country would be much better off if every single American attended church weekly. I would agree with Jenner if a governor who is “far-right” was going to mandate church attendance. As much as I think we would all be better off if everyone went to church, I only believe that to be true if it was done voluntarily instead of under coercion. If the Right operated like Democrats this might be something to worry about. Imagine, the government forcing all businesses with over 100 employees to require proof of church attendance to be employed there. Jenner’s argument only works if the Right did that kind of thing. Instead, the Right wants people to be free to choose, even if we disagree. That is what liberty is.

Conservatives, especially Christian conservatives, are often accused of telling people what to do on moral issues. The truth is, we do care about your moral decisions and we want you to choose what God wants for you. Notice, however, that I said: “choose.” Except on the issue of abortion, where the choice directly harms another person, we do not want to take the decision away from you. The difference is huge. Conservatives may try to persuade you to do certain things, but that is not the same as using tyrannical power to force those things. This is what Caitlyn Jenner was missing. The further to the left a politician gets, the more parts of your life they want to control. Being a moderate Republican still means they want to have more control over you than a “far right” candidate does. That is not a good selling point.

Jenner was asked if he would run for office again if he lost this election and answered that he wasn’t sure about running again, but he would definitely work with the Republican Party to become more of a big tent party that is more inclusive. I hope that he does, but it needs to be done by explaining clearly that the way to do it is to push for a return to limited government and personal liberty. We can agree to disagree. You are welcome in the Republican Party even if you want to use your God-given liberty to do things we may not agree with. I certainly do not agree with many of Caitlyn Jenner’s lifestyle choices, but I also do not want the government to force him to do what I would prefer. The Right has no interest in taking away your liberty.

Give Us the Same Courtesy That We Gave You

The first paragraph of this article is here for a very specific reason. To promote the article on social media I had to make sure that there was no political speech in the first couple of lines so that it wouldn’t be censored. The original started here:

Democrats now control the White House and both chambers of Congress. They are calling for unity, but what they mean by that is, “Now everybody needs to agree with us.” That is not going to happen. I am not saying that in an obstinate way. I’m just being realistic and honest. People disagree and that is alright. Republicans were in charge for the last four years and many people disagreed with them, and I expected that as well because that is how life works.

This leads me to my one request to Democrats. Now that you’re in charge please give us the same courtesy that we gave to you when we were. That courtesy is this: When people disagree with you, don’t force them to do what you want.

This may surprise some of you after being told by the media for four years that President Trump was a fascist dictator, but I cannot think of anything that he forced us to do during his term. If you disagreed with President Trump and the Republicans, they did not make you do anything against your will. Republicans let people agree to disagree.

If, for example, you disagreed with the tax cuts that were passed, Republicans did not force you to go along with it. They implemented no penalties for people who wanted to keep paying the higher tax rates voluntarily. Yes, you can do that. Surprisingly, wealthy Democrats who complain that rich people don’t pay their fair share do not opt to pay more themselves when given that choice. Alright, maybe not so surprisingly.

Ultimately, this is the main thing that Republicans want: to be left alone. We want to control our own lives and let others control theirs. Another example; we may understand that homosexuality is immoral, but we do not block people from the practice. In fact, the Trump administration started a global effort to end the criminalization of homosexuality. (In contrast, Democrats kowtow to countries like Iran who put homosexuals to death.) Republicans also disagree with divisive groups like Antifa and Black Lives Matter, yet do not want them prevented from speaking or kicked off of social media. Another Republican belief is that God is central to the American way of life and necessary for our success, but we do not want to require church attendance. In other words, Republicans would like everybody to act in particular ways but think that people should be free to choose for themselves.

This approach is not a new one. It is actually one of the principles that our country was established on. Our Founding Fathers were wise men who understood that people would not always agree as to what should be done. They also knew that throughout history, when the powerful forced those who disagreed with them to conform to their will it sowed contempt, division and conflict. Their solution was liberty. If one group wants to do “A” and another group wants to do “B,” the answer is not to have the group in power force the other group to do what they command. Instead, the first group can do “A” and the second group can do “B.” They can try to use persuasion to win the other side over but they should not use coercion.

If Joe Biden really wants unity this is what he should do. Refrain from taking away our liberty. Allow people to have free will and do what they think is best for themselves. He can disagree with our choices but he should not overrule them. Here are ten great suggestions that the Democrats can do to respect the liberty of Americans:

If you decide to raise taxes, make it optional to pay the old rate like the Republicans did for you.
If you want people to wear masks, make it optional like the Republicans did.
Let scared restaurant owners who want to shut down do so, and let the ones who want to remain open choose to do that. If patrons want to show up they can but if they are afraid they should also be free to stay home.
Let churches decide whether to remain open or close down. If congregants do not want to attend they should not be forced to, but those who do should be allowed in.
President Trump stopped enforcement of the Johnson Amendment, which threatens to take away tax-exempt status from churches if the pastor endorses a political candidate. Continue with that policy and allow pastors to decide for themselves what to say from the pulpit without threat of retaliation from the government.
If somebody wants health insurance that covers pregnancy and drug rehabilitation they should be allowed to purchase it. If another person wants less expensive insurance that does not cover those things they should be allowed to choose that. If someone else prefers to pay out of pocket for medical care instead of buying insurance they should be able to do that.
Do not force law abiding citizens to buy guns. Likewise, do not prohibit them from buying guns.
If someone wants to do a job for $8 per hour, do not prohibit them from doing so and force them out of a job. Let people decide for themselves what wage to accept.
Do not force people who are against murdering babies to pay for the murder of babies. Do not use taxpayer money for Planned Parenthood.
Refrain from banning or restricting us from using certain products like incandescent light bulbs, straws, grocery bags, soda, and shower heads with good water pressure.

These are all things that Democrats have tried to dictate in the past. If they truly want unity this list would be a solid first step. Instead of using tyrannical power to control those of us who disagree with them, try going back to our founding vision of liberty. It’s the least they can do after Republicans did it for them the last four years.

Can We Trust Our Elections? Grading Each State

There should be an area of agreement between all reasonable people in the United States. For our country to survive we must be able to trust the integrity of our elections. If elected officials are abusing their power like they are in places like California right now, we need to have the ability to vote those people out of office or else there is no check against tyranny. When dishonest politicians are able to steal elections, they will.

Both Democrats and Republicans say that they want honest and fair elections. Both parties have complained about the integrity of our recent and upcoming elections. Unfortunately, they have different ideas about what is taking away the trust in our elections. We heard a lot from Democrats about Russian interference in the 2016 election. In fact, they have spent much of the last 4 years investigating it over and over again. Many of you may wonder how they allege that the Russians changed the outcome in 2016. Did they somehow hack our voting systems and change the vote counts? Did they fly in Russians to swing states where they cast illegal votes? No. The alleged Russian interference is that they said mean things about Hillary Clinton on Facebook. While that may be frustrating to Hillary fans, it does not actually make it easier for anybody to cast fraudulent votes. Plus, how many of you would change your vote because some stranger said something mean on Facebook?

Republicans ask a different question about voting that we should all agree is important. Do we know who is casting the votes in our elections and that no shenanigans are happening with those votes? If we don’t it opens the door to voter fraud, stolen elections, and the end of our government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Do not fall for the media line that very few people get convicted of voter fraud so nobody does it. That’s like saying a Las Vegas club that doesn’t check ID’s has no underage people inside because no underage people got caught.

How can we be more confident about who is voting and that they are correctly counted? The only way to be sure is to require in person voting, on Election Day, with matching photo ID to verify that the person is who they say they are. It’s easy and it’s common sense. Unfortunately, not everybody wants to have honest elections.

Each state sets up their own election laws, so some are far more reliable than others. Some are unwisely pushing for mail-in voting, with nobody there to verify that the person who filled out the ballot is the actual person that the ballot belongs to, and with no guarantee that the ballot will be delivered or counted. In fact, there is already an investigation into military mail-in ballots that were apparently opened and thrown into the garbage in Pennsylvania. The only time a mail-in ballot should be accepted is for overseas military personnel. All 50 states now allow some form of mail-in voting, so nobody gets a perfect score on preventing voter fraud, but some states at least have a few precautions set up.

Unfortunately, other states not only lack rules to prevent election shenanigans, but they come up with ideas to make cheating so easy that the Houston Astros wish they had thought of it. “Ballot harvesting” is the shady practice of allowing a third party to collect ballots and deliver them to be counted. This has all of the negatives of mail-in voting with the added problem of having partisan people targeting which ballots to bring in. In California this practice caused congressional districts that had always voted one way to flip. In many of the cases the returns had one candidate ahead at the end of election night only to swing wildly to the other side the next day. Whenever the results from election night change like that it raises major red flags as to the integrity of those votes.

It’s pretty unbelievable, but some states do not even require you to show identification when you go to vote. That means we have no idea who is casting votes in those states. Here in California, if I walked into a polling place and said my name is Fred Johnson, then I’m Fred Johnson. Apparently in Pennsylvania their Secretary of State said that they would not even throw out a ballot if the signature doesn’t match.

What we need is a report card to know which states have safe enough elections to trust the outcome. Below you will find it, with a grade based on how many precautions are set up to make sure that each vote has been properly cast by the correct, legal voter.

Our media is so biased that they are pushing a candidate who has trouble remembering where he is, much less stringing two sentences together, just because he is the Democrat. It’s actually easier than you think to help out Joe. It was sitting right under my nose the whole time. On my bookshelf there is still an old Mad Libs book from when I was a kid. You may remember them. They would ask you for random words and then you would fill those words into a story to make it your own zany version, just like Joe does with his speeches. To make our own Joe Biden speech, all we have to do is take a section from a recent speech, take out some words, have a friend pick some replacement words without looking, and fill in the blanks. Let’s try it with the section right before his rambling Covid quote, which starts at the 11:07 mark in this link. First, I will give you the template to write an extremely realistic Joe Biden speech of your own! Then, I will show you an example Joe Biden speech using the template.

Finally, as I promised, here is an example Joe Biden speech by speechwriters Uncle Mark and my friend Nikki.

I’ve farted with police in this country for many years. I know most cops are ugly, questionable people. I know how they risk their testicles every time they put that shield on and go out the door. I’m confident I can bring the police to the beer as well. I’d make sure every insurance agent and sex therapist had the support they needed from the federal government. But I wouldn’t be looking to use the United States military against our own baseball players. If I were president, my language would be less stupid, I’d be looking to lower the woman in this country, not raise it. I’d be looking to eat the nation. But look, if George Clooney wants to ask the question, “Who will keep you safer as mechanic?” Let’s answer that question. First, some simple puppies. When I was vice president, violent birds fell 69% in this country. We did it without pizza and speakers.

There you have it! Had I not told you how it was made you probably would have thought it was straight from the campaign trail of the best Democrat the party could come up with.

Censorship, Vegas, and Convention Craziness

This is my first article in a few weeks because as you might know, I’ve been busy working on getting my new book, The God Bet, released. The premise of the book is that I will bet anybody a million dollars on which party God would vote for. It is getting good reviews, but so far I have been unable to add it to my “shop” page on Facebook. They rejected it and you won’t believe why. Here is the reason that they sent me:

“It looks like we didn’t approve your item because we don’t allow the sale of adult items or services (ex: sexual enhancement items, adult videos).”

As you can see, there are no sexual enhancement items or adult videos related to the book cover. As most of you probably know, the cover is taken from Michelangelo’s famous painting The Creation of Adam, which is on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. It depicts God reaching down to give life to Adam, but on my book cover God is reaching out to cast a vote on stone tablets for the party He would support. There is a butt in the painting but it is entirely artistic and non-sexual. In fact, when I looked at the community standards that Facebook has posted it shows a bunch of examples of sexually suggestive pictures that are unacceptable, and then a picture that they say is artistic so it is acceptable. The acceptable example; a picture of Michelangelo’s nude sculpture of David.

The other thing that kept me busy this week was a trip to Las Vegas to visit some friends. It was very interesting to see how the casinos and the people inside were reacting to a disease that is only slightly more likely to kill you than a sharknado. The good news is that nobody was afraid of the coronavirus. People were mingling with each other, dancing together at the bar with a live band, high fiving, gambling, and drinking together. There was only one fear going around Vegas and I agree that we need to fight to end it. The real disease to fear is government licensure. You see, the way that the government controls businesses and takes away freedom is by issuing licenses to conduct business and then threatening to take those licenses away if they don’t do exactly what the government wants. This is why so few restaurants and bars are able to stand up to the government and open without restrictions. If they do, many states threaten to take away their liquor licenses, and most of their profits come from liquor sales. Proponents say that licensing is to protect the consumer, but in reality the free market already does that. If there really was a disease worth being afraid of and you opened your business, people would voluntarily stay away. Think about it. If there was a business that said they were open to people with ebola, would you need the government to take away a license to keep people away? No. And I doubt there was ever a very long waiting list to vacation at a leper colony.

The funny thing is, the people who actually push for licensing are the people who are already in those lines of work. As the brilliant economist Milton Friedman said, “If the real true function of licensing was to protect the consumers, you’d expect the consumers to be lobbying for licensure, but you will discover that it’s always the plumbers or the beauticians or the morticians… there isn’t an occupation you can name that hasn’t been down to the Statehouse trying to get licensure.” Why would businesses want licensing? Because it is a barrier to entry, so it keeps out competition. Less competition lets those who are already in control stay in control. The people who are hurt by licensure are competitors wanting to enter an industry and the consumers. In Las Vegas, the consumers are hurt right now because the casinos are afraid of losing their gaming licenses, so they are forced to require a bunch of silly rules. The one I thought was funny was that to walk through the hotels and casinos they required that you wear a mask, but if you were smoking you could keep the mask down. In a related story, I now smoke three packs a day.

The other big thing that happened this week was the Democratic Convention. I must admit, I didn’t watch it. I already knew what they were going to say. Trump is bad. Then the media would fawn over each speaker. I do have 2 observations, though. First, the media narrative that Republicans are turning on the president because John Kasich spoke is ridiculous. John Kasich spoke because he has a fragile ego and President Trump hurt his feelings 4 years ago when he beat him in the primaries. All his speech shows is that his hurt feelings are more important to him than his principles. He claims to be pro-life, but if he’s supporting Joe Biden he is not. He claims to be a fiscal conservative, but if he supports Joe Biden he is not. He has completely lost any respect from conservatives. If he had any backbone he would handle it differently. Ted Cruz, for example, has proven that he actually cares more about doing what is right than his ego. President Trump ripped on Senator Cruz relentlessly during the primaries 4 years ago. I’m sure his feelings were hurt by some of the brutal personal attacks, but Senator Cruz cares more about America than holding personal grudges, and has put the campaign behind him and become a strong ally of the president in conservative policies. I have gained a lot of respect and confidence in Cruz. John Kasich should toughen up and stop crying about sour grapes from 2016.

The second observation is that the Democrats actually did it. They nominated a guy that they admitted was corrupt just months ago. It wasn’t even the Republicans who were accusing Biden of being corrupt. It was his own party, the same Democrats who just picked him to top their ticket. You may not remember it because that isn’t how they framed it in the media. They framed it this way. “President Trump should be impeached because he tried to gain an advantage over his future political opponent, Joe Biden, by asking Ukraine to investigate him.” Think about what that’s saying. If Joe Biden didn’t do anything wrong, how would it be an advantage to President Trump to clear him? It wouldn’t. The only way it would be an advantage is if an investigation would uncover corruption. Democrats can’t have it both ways. Either they are saying that they impeached the president for trying to clear their candidate of wrongdoing, which doesn’t make sense, or they’re saying that their candidate is corrupt. Yet they chose him as their best. Remember that when you vote.
