In Memoriam 2025

2025 has been a roller coaster.  As Bob Dylan would say, the times they are a-changin’.  Many great things have happened.  After four years of weakness, America is strong again.  The bad guys fear us.  We are no longer allowing Iran to develop nuclear weapons.  We once again support our greatest ally, Israel.  Inflation is down.  Gas prices are down.  Illegal border crossings are not only down, but are basically non-existent.  Crime is down and our streets are safer.  In general, things seem to be heading in the right direction.

Unfortunately, 2025 has been a year in which we lost some very great men.  These were some of the most influential people in my life.  Their loss will be felt widely, and there is a void in moral thinking that will be nearly impossible to fill.

Hulk Hogan (July 24) – The Hulkster deserves an honorable mention on this list because his influence on us was mostly through entertainment and his wrestling career.  While you may not think of Hulk Hogan as a leader in Christian thought or a great moral teacher, he did, in fact, turn his life back to Jesus in his final years.  He made this list because he articulated one of the most important and simplest messages that all of us should understand.

On August 23, 2023, Hogan went on The Joe Rogan Experience and said that he attended and was baptized at Indian Rocks Baptist Church in Florida.  When Joe Rogan warned him against naming his church because swarms of people might show up to “go to church with the Hulkster,” Hogan said, “No.  I want more people there.

He recognized his true purpose for being on this earth.  It happens to be the same purpose that all of us have.  As the Apostle Paul told the Ephesians in Acts 20:24, “But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.”  Ultimately, the only meaning for our lives is to spread the good news of Jesus.

Dr. James Dobson (August 21) – Dr. Dobson helped my parents raise me.  His best-selling 1970 book Dare to Disciplinewas a must-read for Christian parents in the 1970s and ‘80s.  I vividly remember watching videos of Dr. Dobson lectures on parenting and childhood in church as a kid.  What he said made sense, and he earned my respect even then.

My dad would often tell me that “Dr. Dobson says this” when teaching me lessons about growing up.  On the advice of Dr. Dobson, he even took me on a “Preparing for Adolescence Weekend,” where we got to go stay in a hotel and do fun father-son activities while he also taught me from Dr. Dobson’s book, Preparing for Adolescence, about what to expect in those formative years of my life.  I still have the copy of the book that he gave me that weekend.

Dr. Dobson formed the juggernaut Christian organization Focus on the Family in 1977.  It became a massive multimedia empire that helped bring family values to the forefront again.  As Focus on the Family grew, it gained influence in American politics and social issues.  Now, if you search the internet for Dr. Dobson, you will find many attacks on him by people who reject the Bible.  This shows how effective he was at spreading solid, biblical values to families across our country.  He will be missed, but if more families rediscover his wisdom, our nation will be better off.

Pastor John MacArthur (July 14) – He was the greatest biblical scholar of my lifetime, with a body of work that includes nearly 400 books.  The MacArthur Study Bible is one of the most well-regarded study Bibles around and has commentary on the entire Old and New Testaments.  It is also the Bible that I personally use and recommend.

I became familiar with John MacArthur because of a girl.  I really liked her, and she was a Christian, but she started getting into charismatic Christianity, which concerned me.  I wanted to learn more about it, so I found the book, Charismatic Chaos, by Pastor MacArthur.  I eventually lost touch with the girl, but never with John MacArthur.

When the government tried to illegally and immorally shut down churches in 2020, he instead obeyed the Bible’s instruction from Hebrews 10:25 to “not forsake the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some,” and reopened the doors of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California for services.  I had the pleasure of hearing Pastor MacArthur preach in person.

John MacArthur was also the President of The Master’s University and the founder of The Master’s Seminary, so many other pastors and missionaries learned the Bible under his leadership and tutelage.  While his loss will leave gaps that his insights and knowledge might have bridged, much of his wisdom is fortunately still available through his writing and through his media ministry, Grace to YouThere you can find all of his sermon recordings dating back to February 9, 1969.

Charlie Kirk (September 10) – Charlie was the most effective Christian evangelist in the last decade, and he was not even a pastor.  He broke onto the scene as a political commentator and strategist at only 18 years old, when he started Turning Point USA in 2012.  He was brilliant.  He was ambitious.  When I first heard about him, he was an up-and-comer in the conservative movement.  Then, in 2020, while attending Calvary Chapel Chino Hills against tyrannical government orders, Charlie came as a guest to speak with Pastor Jack Hibbs.  I was instantly impressed.  He was not only knowledgeable about politics and our culture, but he knew God’s word.  He looked at politics the same way I do.  He realized that political wins are important, but that they would be futile and short-lived if they were not built on a strong understanding and belief in God.

Charlie was not just a thought leader.  He was not a modern general who plans the battle and sends out orders.  He was like an old general who rode his horse to the front lines and led the charge.  Through a successful podcast and radio show he shared his message.  Through Turning Point Action, he built a massive political organization that mobilized and won elections for candidates who love freedom.

As we all know, he also got down into the trenches of the most godless, morally bankrupt, dangerous places in our country:  college campuses.  He stood up to the intellectual brainwashing of our youth by openly speaking about both political issues and the Bible.  He was articulate.  He was courageous.  Most importantly, he was effective.  Unfortunately, this moral clarity and effectiveness led many to hate him.  As Jesus says in John 15:18, “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you.”  On September 10th, a young man, fueled by the vitriol of the left, gunned down Charlie while Charlie was speaking at one of those college events.

This will be the toughest hole to fill because he was in the prime of his life and had lots more to accomplish.  His death also left a power struggle in the conservative movement that is very dangerous.  Some bad actors are trying to push us away from biblical values and into anti-Israel positions.  Charlie would be appalled.  We need to honor him by filling that void with voices who follow the values he preached.  We also need to keep the revival going that began with his martyrdom.  Churches are seeing a swell in attendance.  This is directly related to Charlie.

Fortunately, all of us are able to revisit Charlie’s college debate videos online.  Even I have been surprised at how many of those videos were about Jesus.  We all need to keep that in mind as we try to continue what Charlie Kirk started.

This has been a rough year for some of my most trusted voices.  These losses are on top of missing the wisdom of the great Dennis Prager, who is no longer on the radio after his spinal injury at the end of last year.  Hopefully, he will regain enough strength to share that wisdom widely again.

We have reason for optimism about 2026 and beyond, but I wanted to acknowledge some of the great men that we lost this year and pray for people to rise up in their places.  Happy New Year!

Be Like Pedro

About four years ago, I was asked to do a long-term substitute teaching job for about two months.  The class was an adult transition program, a type of special education class for 18 to 22-year-old students who have finished high school.  In these classes, the students spend some time in the classroom, but also go out into the community to local businesses where they do things like wipe down tables and fill salt and pepper shakers. They help out at the job sites and try to build skills for after they age out of school.  What I didn’t expect was that this would become my favorite sub job ever.

Being a moderate to severe special ed class, there was a range of issues that the students had.  Two were in wheelchairs.  One girl would do a sort of call and response routine where she would call out, “Twinkle, twinkle, Mr. Connally.”  Then I would have to say, “Sing Twinkle, twinkle,” or she would just keep asking.  Then she would sing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.”  Then you would have to say, “Good job,” or she would sing it again until you did.

There was another girl who would eat any food she could get her hands on, so you could not leave anything sitting around.  One boy had an aide who would walk around the school with him all day.  Another girl would run away, or have violent outbursts, but was perfectly fine as long as she had pictures to color.

Then there was Pedro.  He was my favorite.  Pedro was a little guy, probably not even five feet tall.  He did not really talk, but he did use sounds and gestures to communicate.  Each morning, I would take my seat at the front desk and set up while I waited for the students and the aides to arrive.  As soon as Pedro came in, he would come up to my desk, tap on my shoulder, and point to his desk.  I would go over and do puzzles with him.  It was our routine.  He would always grab the same two Spider-Man puzzles, and I probably did those same two puzzles two hundred times in my two months there.  Pedro made my day for one simple reason: he was easy to make happy.  He took joy in every little victory.  That joy was contagious.  For example, when we did those puzzles, every time he got a piece to fit in, he would look at me and say, “Woohoo!”  Then I would do it.  It was fun.

After that, we would do our morning meeting, and we would go over things like what day it was, what season it was, and how the weather was.  We would call on kids to go up and pick answers on the screen about those things.  Whenever we called on Pedro, he would jump out of his chair and run up to the front, pumping his hands in the air and exclaiming, “Woohoo!” like he had just been told to “Come on down!” on The Price is Right.  When we went to the work sites, Pedro would take such pride in his jobs.  At one restaurant, he got picked to pour ice from the ice machine into the ice well at the bar.  I started calling him “Ice Man,” and his face lit up like he was the most important guy in the world.

That was what I loved about Pedro.  He would get so excited about the smallest things.  This is a trait that everyone should strive for.  It is counter to how many people think.  So many of us are never content.  Most people get desensitized to small joys that used to seem so significant.  Think about how thrilling it was to hear the ice cream truck, or to get a sticker at the doctor’s office.

Someone once told me that they had been around baseball for so long that they do not get excited anymore.  I remember thinking, “How sad is that?  I never want to lose that joy.”  I want to be like Pedro.  I want that childlike exuberance forever.  When someone says that I often act like a big kid, I do not see it as an insult.  I wear it as a badge of honor.  We should all take joy in the little blessings in life.

I just found my favorite pair of sunglasses that I had misplaced.  It made my day!  That is a good thing.  I still get delighted when I find a nickel on the ground.  If you do not have that sense of wonder in life, I encourage you to work on it.  If you are unhappy, this one thing will help you a lot.  If you are lonely, more people will like you and want to be your friend if you are easily contented.  Not only that, but your attitude will be infectious.  Other people will be happier.  It was hard to be in a bad mood around Pedro.

After that class got a new teacher, I would often sub for other classes at the same school.  Whenever Pedro would see me, his eyes would brighten up, he would point and get excited like those videos of soldiers surprising their family by returning from deployment.  Pedro may have been in special ed classes, but most of us can learn a lot from him.

Try it.  Be like Pedro!

Affirm or Help?

Say a friend came to you for financial advice.  “I’ve really been depressed lately,” he says.  “I feel like I should be rich, but I have $150,000 of debt piled up on credit cards.”

Would you:

A) Affirm his feelings and say, “Wow, man.  I’m so sorry.  I think you should go buy yourself a Lamborghini so that you can live how you feel.”

or

B) Try to help and say, “Wow, man.  I’m so sorry.  Let’s see if we can figure out how to cut your spending and help you feel comfortable living within your means.”

This may sound like a pretty obvious answer to you.  It would be at best irresponsible, and at worst evil to affirm his feelings.  This analogy is exactly the same as the trans issue we are dealing with today.  If a male friend came to you and said, “I’ve been really depressed lately.  I feel like I’m a girl.”

Would you:

A) Affirm his feelings and say, “Wow, miss.  I’m so sorry.  I will use female pronouns for you.  Let’s get you on some girl hormones and have a doctor remove your boy parts.”

or

B) Try to help and say, “Wow, man.  I’m so sorry.  Let’s get you some help so that you can feel comfortable as a man.”

Affirming something that is not true does not help anyone.  As shown by the Cass Review, a landmark 2024 UK study, it makes things worse.  We know that gender dysphoria is a mental health problem that is doing a lot of damage in the world.  It is not healthy.

Both sides know this.  Conservatives point out that Robin Westman, the shooter at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis on August 27, 2025, suffered from gender dysphoria. Instead of receiving help to address it, Westman was affirmed with a name change and female pronouns, and mainstream news still refers to him as ‘she,’ even after the tragedy.

Using “affirming language” does not help them.  Giving them hormones of the opposite sex does not help them.  Surgery does not help them.  Even the people pushing that approach know that it does not work.  They give proof themselves when they point out that nearly 40% of those with gender dysphoria attempt suicide, yet the Cass Review shows no evidence that hormones or surgery reduce this risk.  They do not come to the obvious conclusion that we should stop trying to normalize this mental illness.  They instead blame the people who want to help those suffering from it.

Instead of going along with a feeling based outside of reality, we need to make it easier for people to find help.  Unfortunately, when you search for help, most of what you find is the opposite.  Even if you ask ChatGPT, it suggests biased, secular organizations that will not help you overcome your gender dysphoria.  You would be taking a major risk if you go to a psychologist who studied at an American university.  Radical gender ideology has saturated those places.  They are far more likely to make things worse by encouraging you to continue in your confusion, or even to act on it with hormones or surgeries.  In fact, these radicals have succeeded in banning helping people in some states.  There is a major case in front of the Supreme Court right now, Chiles v. Salazar, that will decide if states can ban what they call “conversion therapy,” which ironically is not conversion at all.  It is affirming a person’s real gender.

This is why we need to share good resources for people who need help.  Since you cannot just look for help online without getting awful results, here are resources that you can go to if you or someone you love is struggling:

  1. If you are near a Bible believing church, that is a great place to start.  Talk to a pastor.  The one obstacle to this approach is knowing which church to go to.  There are churches now that call themselves “progressive” or “affirming.”  Those are not real churches.  They are social clubs for people who want to belong to a church but do not like what God says.  If you are not familiar with the Bible and are unsure of what church to go to, email me at steve@steveconnally.com and I will personally research and find a scriptural church in your area.
  2. Focus on the Family – Transgender Resources – Offers Christian-based guidance for families and individuals, including compassionate counseling options, articles on standing firm in biological identity, and practical guidance for parents and churches.  www.focusonthefamily.com/parenting/transgender-resources/
  3. Restored Hope Network – Its website says, “Restored Hope is a membership governed, inter-denominational network dedicated to restoring hope to those broken by sexual and relational sin, especially those impacted by homosexuality and gender confusion. We proclaim that Jesus Christ has life-changing power for all who submit to Christ as Lord; we also seek to equip His church to impart that transformation.” https://www.restoredhopenetwork.org/what-we-believe
  4. Sex Change Regret – Founded by Walt Heyer (who detransitioned after living for 8 years as a trans woman), this ministry offers testimonies and counseling aimed at addressing underlying trauma and encouraging healing in alignment with one’s God-given design. They emphasize the spiritual and psychological roots of gender confusion. https://sexchangeregret.com/
  5. Advocates Protecting ChildrenAPC’s core mission is to serve and equip those responding to gender activism by offering facts, research, and guidance. Its vision explicitly calls for the “abolition of the gender industry,” including shutting down gender clinics and cosmetic surgeries for minors, while emphasizing child protection and holistic healing. The organization stresses that gender dysphoria in children often resolves naturally with supportive, non-affirming care, citing studies on desistance rates and long-term outcomes.  They also provide educational materials for parents, educators, and churches, as well as peer groups and low-cost counseling referrals. www.advocatesprotectingchildren.org/
  6. Harvest USAThis organization is located in Pennsylvania and focuses on providing biblical guidance for sexual and relational struggles, including transgenderism, pornography, and same-sex attraction.  They offer counseling in Philadelphia or virtually, but their website also has a lot of good resources about any number of struggles. https://harvestusa.org/how-we-help/transgenderism/

One final thought.  I know that some will argue that we should lie and affirm gender dysphoria because it might stop somebody from harming themselves or even taking their own life.  Would you say the same thing if your daughter’s boyfriend threatened to kill himself if she breaks up with him?  That happens often, and some boys do follow through.  Using the possibility of suicide to emotionally manipulate people is not an acceptable reason to give them their way.  It is tragic when somebody chooses to end their life, but that is not a reason to accept lies.  Try to help them by lovingly telling them the truth.

Charlie Kirk and Our Turning Point

Charlie Kirk was a great man.  I had the pleasure of seeing him speak with Pastor Jack Hibbs at church back in 2020.  I also worked for Turning Point Action during the 2024 election.  He loved our country, he loved Jesus, and he loved his wife and two young children.

Today, he was taken by an act of pure evil.  The organization that Charlie Kirk started was called Turning Point USA, and today needs to be a turning point for our country.  My first reaction when I heard that he had died was anger.  I was angry at Democrats for the murder of a brilliant young husband and father.  How could they want this?  What kind of terrible people could do this?

Then I took a breath and prayed.  I am still angry, but I realized that my anger needs to be logical and focused.  Not all Democrats wanted this.  In fact, I am sure that many Democrats are disgusted by Charlie Kirk’s murder.  My anger should not be towards them.  Our turning point actually needs to start with them.  If you are shocked and disgusted by this evil act, you still have hope.

My anger is not towards most average Democrats.  My anger is towards the leftist ideology and worldview.  My anger is towards secularism.  My anger is towards the media who pushed this secular-leftist worldview.  The only way we can turn this country around is to turn to Jesus.

If you are one of those who held those views but are outraged and appalled at this murder, we need you.  We need to end secular leftist ideology.  We need to bring back sanity.  That requires Jesus.  Charlie Kirk would be the first to agree with that sentiment.  Jesus is the only one who can fix this.  We are at this point because our nation has gotten further from God.  We need a religious revival.

If you are a Democrat, and this terrible evil has woken you up to the damage that turning from God has done, I am pleading with you to give Jesus a chance.  Go to church and talk to a pastor about Jesus.  You still have hope.  You can even send me a message if you have questions.  If you are genuine, I will respond.

Charlie Kirk has spoken openly about how Jesus saved his life.  I know with certainly that I will see Charlie Kirk again in Heaven. Until then, thank you Charlie.

Know Your Audience

As a blogger, one of the main questions you have to ask yourself is, “Who am I writing to?”  Is your ideal audience people who agree with you or people who disagree with you that you are trying to persuade?

The reason it is important to know your audience is because you will take a different tone depending on who you have in mind.  Part of what made me think about this was listening to other voices in the conservative movement.  Some do not seem persuasive to me at all.  Mark Levin, for example, is a brilliant guy, but he comes off as a grumpy old man who thrashes anyone who disagrees with him.

Others who I admire seem more persuasive.  Rush Limbaugh did not come off as a grumpy guy.  He did not come off as mean.  He loved parody and satire to make his points.  He would “illustrate absurdity by being absurd.”  He would mock the left.  What made him great was that he came off as a happy-go-lucky guy, with a genial personality and a good sense of humor.  Dennis Prager is also very kind and fun-loving.  He treats everyone with respect, whether they agree with him or not.  He even wrote an entire book on happiness.

Without hesitation, I will tell you that my main goal is to persuade people.  I want to influence people and make a difference.  I want to explain conservatism in a way that makes sense to people and turns them into conservatives.  Most importantly, I want to point people towards the Bible.  Maybe, just maybe, it will lead someone to turn to God.  Ultimately, that is our purpose for being alive.

What does this mean?  I mentioned that Rush Limbaugh used to mock the left.  Can I joke about people who I am trying to persuade?  Can I mock them?  Can I call them out for believing stupid things?  I don’t want to come off as a complete jerk to reasonable people.  That last sentence holds the key word:  reasonable.

If you look at the likes on my posts and articles, you would think most of the people who read my thoughts agree with me.  If you read the comments, you would think that most of the people disagree with me, or even viciously hate me.  While I want to persuade people, there are people who I am not writing to.  There are people who are completely unreasonable and unreachable.  Their minds are closed.  Don’t get me wrong, I hope they read my articles and think about them.  Maybe that seed will eventually grow.  However, I do not care to argue with them.  It is a waste of time and energy.  Most of them are dug in to their emotional positions and will just harden their hearts to any other viewpoint.  If I do argue, it is for the other people to hear the arguments, not because I think the crazed leftist will budge.  They are fair game to be poked fun at or used as examples of foolishness.

The people I am writing to are the people who are genuinely open to understanding.  That does not necessarily mean people in the middle.  It might, but some of the most closed-minded people I know are staunchly “independent.”  They are so concerned with seeming open-minded that they will not take a side.  The people I am writing to are people who are actually curious.  Instead of arguing or trying to ask gotcha questions, they ask good, honest questions.  They say things like, “Hmm.  I never really thought of it that way.  That makes a lot of sense.”  If they want to argue, they probably are not ready to hear.

When it comes to the people who already agree with me, my gut reaction was that it does not do any good to “preach to the choir,” but the more I thought about it, the wider my focus became.  There are two main reasons to write to people who are already on my side.  First, I want you to know that you are not alone.  If you turn on a T.V., read from mainstream media sources, or attend college, you hear 95% secular leftist viewpoints.  You might start thinking you are the only sane person left on earth.  Even worse, you may start to doubt your sanity.  I imagine it is a feeling that the Old Testament prophets had when they spoke up for God and the people ignored them.  It is a lonely feeling.  I have felt it myself, especially living in California.  It always helps to hear that other people are with you.  Second, I want to help give you reasons for your beliefs and positions that you might not have been able to put into words yourself.  This might give you ammunition to explain biblical, conservative values to your friends and family.  There have been many times when I have listened to people like the great Dennis Prager and thought, “He is putting into words exactly what I think, but better than I could have!”

Ultimately, I hope everyone reads what I write, but it will only resonate with reasonable people.  Some of you will just get irrationally angry at me.  Please feel free to leave crazy comments.  Those are fun.

Bill Gates vs. Elon Musk

Bill Gates and Elon Musk are both massively wealthy innovators.  They have also become divisive figures to large swaths of the population.

Mr. Musk, of course, riled the left by heading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which had as its goal to cut government spending and help our country be more fiscally responsible.

Mr. Gates is known for his charitable giving through his Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.  While many conservatives take issue with some of the left-wing causes that Gates contributes to, most people would praise much of the giving that deals with feeding children in third world nations.  In May, he announced that he would donate almost all of his fortune, nearly $200 billion, by 2045.

Conflict arose after Gates announcement when he took a shot at Musk.  Gates accused Elon of “killing the world’s poorest children” with his proposed cuts in USAID programs.  While Mr. Gates is right that we should help the poor, there are some big problems with his criticism of Elon.

First, while Gates might have good intentions wanting to help people through USAID, it is a very unwise use of our money.  The United States Government does not have the money to spend.  It would be one thing if the government had a large budget surplus.  Unfortunately, the government is operating on an estimated budget deficit of $1.83 trillion!  It is not a good idea to spend money that you do not have.

Second, and more importantly, there is the issue of freedom.  One of the main differences between conservatives and leftists is what we do about disagreement.  Conservatives say, “I disagree, so I’ll do what I want and you do what you want as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone.”  Leftists say, “I disagree, so the government should force you to do what I say.”  In short, conservatives believe in freedom.  Leftists do not.

This criticism by Gates denies the American people of their freedom.  If we cut USAID, it does not deny the people the ability to help people through foreign aid.  Any person who wants to donate money to the causes that Gates supports can do it the same way he does, through private donations.  There are, in fact, many good reasons for a person to prefer individual charitable donations to going through the government.  If we have learned anything from DOGE, it is that government is wrought with waste and fraud, and highly inefficient.

There is a recent TikTok that went viral by a woman named Jen Hamilton, where she makes a similar argument.  She even tries to make the case that the Bible backs her position.  In the video, she is responding to a comment that said, “Whoa.  Be careful there.  I am happily MAGA and absolutely love Jesus.  We are exhausted from liberal nonsense.”  Hamilton opens her Bible and reads from Matthew 25:31-45, which culminates in Jesus explaining, “Then they also will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’ Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.”  As she reads the passage, she overlays on the screen headlines that say things like, “Millions of Low-Income Households Would Lose Food Aid Under Proposed House Republican SNAP Cuts,” “Trump’s new spending bill includes reducing federal funding for SNAP food program by nearly $300 billion,” and “Exploring the potential impact of Medicaid cuts in Trump’s big budget bill.”  Then she says, “I don’t know.  Sounds pretty liberal.”

This woman and Gates make the same mistake.  They equate care for the needy with government spending.  What she forgets is that the Bible also advocates for free will.  The Bible is very clear about this.  2 Corinthians 9:7 says, “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”  When you push for government spending to fund your pet causes, you are using compulsion through taxes to pay for what you think is best.  Government spending does not even count towards what the Bible says to do, because it is not by choice.  You are basically saying, “I care about this cause, so you should be forced to pay for it.”  That is not caring.  It is controlling.

When it comes to the giving that the Bible actually calls for, conservatives dominate the left. Statistics show that while conservatives earn 6% less income, they give 30% more to charity.  The fact that Elon wants to save money for taxpayers is the opposite of greedy.  It actually helps people, and respects their freedom to choose where to give their charitable dollars.  Those charitable dollars are far more likely to be spent wisely when not being filtered through government bureaucracies.

Bill Gates has the right to give his fortune to whatever causes he chooses to.  Some of those causes are probably great.  Likewise, you should have the right to give to whatever causes you choose to.  Here lies the big difference.  While conservatives would love it if Bill Gates gave to causes of our choosing, we respect his free will.  Conservatives think that freedom must be protected, even if people choose to use their money differently than we want.  It is their money, not ours, and not the government’s.  Elon Musk respects this fact, and should be praised for his work at DOGE, not attacked.

California Classrooms:  From “Yes, Ma’am” to “F Off”

California is fighting back.  No.  Not against crime.  Not against sky-high gas prices.  Not against overregulation.  My home state is fighting back to keep obstinate, disruptive kids in classrooms with your kids.

In a Los Angeles Times article by Daniel Miller, he explains that President Trump signed an executive order on April 23 that directed the Education Department to “root out school discipline frameworks based on discriminatory equity ideology and issue new commonsense practices in the nation’s K-12 schools.”  In other words, President Trump does not think school discipline should be a matter of skin color.  The state of California worries that this will lead to legal challenges, because their school discipline policies were changed in 2019 based entirely on woke, racial ideologies.  They passed a law that year that banned suspending students who were “willfully defiant.”

Willful defiance is not an accident.  It is, by definition, a purposeful act.  Imagine a teacher who sees a kid with his cellphone out during class and tells him to put it away.  In the past, kids would say, “Yes, Ma’am,” and put it away, knowing they had been caught.  If they instead kept tapping at their phone and told the teacher to “F Off,” that would be willful defiance.  Until 2019, schools could respond to such bad behavior by suspending the kid from school.  After 2019, that student could not be suspended.

Why would California want to protect a willfully defiant student like that?  The answer should not surprise you.  California is woke, and based its decision on twisted, misused, and incomplete statistics on race and suspensions.  Miller writes that “President Obama had directed schools to avoid enacting discipline policies that disproportionately punished underrepresented student groups – a stance later supported by President Biden.”

The state of California is allowing willfully defiant students to disrupt your child from learning because they say that black students are more likely to be suspended for willful defiance than white students, once again falsely implying that racism is rampant in our country.  Here is the problem.  California bases its claim that black students are disproportionately punished on twisted statistics.  Miller’s article says that “Black students accounted for 17% of total suspensions in California – despite making up less than 6% of the student population.”  That does not mean that black students are disproportionately punished.  The article does not give you the relevant information to know that.  The implication is that since only 6% of the students are black and 17% of the suspensions are black, those students are overrepresented by 11%.  The problem is, the 6% number is entirely irrelevant, and the one statistic that is important is not even mentioned.  The statistic that you actually need to know is the percentage of willfully defiant students who are black.  That number is likely right around 17%.

To make it easy to understand, say there are 10,000 students in your school district.  If 6% of the students are black and 94% are white, that means 600 students are black and 9,400 are white.  Then, say that 100 of the students are willfully defiant; 17 blacks and 83 whites.  According to the logic of Obama, Biden, and California, if you do not suspend 94 whites and 6 blacks, that would be disproportionate and racist.  That would mean you have to let 11 of the willfully defiant black students get away with it, and worse, you would have to suspend 11 innocent white students.  While this solution makes perfect sense to Democrats, they realize it would be hard to explain to the public, and especially to the parents of those 11 innocent white students.  That led them to an alternative solution; to stop suspending any of the willfully defiant students.  Now, the 9,900 other students have to sit in class with willfully defiant brats disrupting them, both black and white.

As you can see, the relevant number in that scenario is not the percentage of the 10,000 students who are black.  It is the percentage of the 100 willfully defiant students who are black that is important.  The article does not tell us that number.

The divisive left does the same thing when talking about people in prison for murder.  They often claim that there is a disproportionate number of blacks in prison for murder than whites because more than 50% of the people in prison for murder are black, and only about 12% of the U.S. population is black.  The 12% statistic is, of course, irrelevant.  They fail to mention the one relevant fact, that more than 50% of murders are committed by blacks.  That means that the number of blacks in prison for murder is proportionate to the number of murders they commit.  Hopefully, their solution is not the same as it is with willfully defiant students; to stop putting any murderers in prison.

The list of reasons you should never let your child attend a public school is as long as Santa’s naughty and nice lists put together.  The fact that they have to deal with willfully defiant students in class can now be added.

We Are Living Schindler’s List

It is award season, and we are all hearing the Oscar buzz. Will it be the musical about the transgender drug lord?  The biopic about Bob Dylan?  The musical about witches in Oz?  While some of the movies are pretty good, none of them really stand out as a film that we will be talking about or quoting five years from now.  Some films actually do stand the test of time.  Lately, I have been contemplating a memorable Best Picture winner from the past.

The big winner at the Oscars for 1993 was Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece, Schindler’s List. The film was based on the true story of Oskar Schindler, a businessman in Poland, who hired Jewish workers for his factory during World War II.  When the Nazis began to round up Jews to be sent to death camps for extermination, Schindler became a hero by helping Jews escape being murdered at the hands of the Nazis.

Today, most of us think that we would have done the same, but very few did stand up for Jews in occupied Europe during World War II.  Schindler risked his own life for the lives of others.  Looking back, it was obviously a noble cause.

Contemplating Oskar Schindler made me think about an acquaintance of mine who was always desperately longing to be part of a noble cause.  Unfortunately, he also desperately wanted to be liked and approved of by our mainstream, secular culture.  For this reason, he started looking at the causes that were popular in society.  He tried to take up the causes of the people who see themselves as victims.  He began to see race as the motivating force for everything.  He looked to the past and saw the civil rights movement of the middle of the last century, and since that was an important, noble cause, he wanted to be a part of it.  He got caught up in the slandering of whites and the police.  It turned out not to be enough for him for a couple of big reasons.  First, the real civil rights movement was won before he was born.  Segregation had ended.  Jim Crow had been defeated.  People who think skin color makes somebody better or worse are hard to find.  The only people still pushing race as a problem are hucksters like Al Sharpton who are trying to make a buck.  My acquaintance’s second problem was that he is not black.  He could not claim to be a victim himself.  This eventually led him to other woke causes, none of which are noble.

He was led astray by his searching for meaning and something to fight for, but most people do want to be part of a noble cause.  It gives purpose to your life.  Instead of looking to the past for a cause that our grandparents already fought, we need to fight a fight that is relevant now.  Here is the thing.  We can have an even bigger impact than Oskar Schindler did.  We are living Schindler’s List right now.  In fact, there is a cause that is even more important than Schindler’s.  While the Jews of Europe were boarding trains to almost certain death at Nazi death camps, many more people today are boarding a train to eternal death and torment in the next life.  We have the opportunity to help these people like Schindler helped those that he saved.   Countless people have not accepted Jesus as their Savior and are thus on the path to Hell and eternal damnation.  It should be our cause to tell those people about Jesus.

Matthew 28:18-20 says, “And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’”  This is our mission on Earth.

Not only that, but nothing you do in life is as important as what you do that directs people to Heaven.  If you are the best athlete on the planet, it is meaningless if it does not point people to God.  If you have career success and immense riches, it is meaningless unless that career or your money shows people the route to Heaven.  If you are powerful and lead many people, it does not matter unless you lead those people to the truths of the Bible.  This does not mean that you have to stand on a street corner preaching, but it does mean that everything you do should be done with God in mind and the glory should be given to Him.  If you do this, you have that noble cause.  You are just as important as Oskar Schindler.

The Sky is Falling!  Testing the Predictions of Doom by Democrats

Who remembers the story of Chicken Little?  In the children’s tale, something falls from a tree on Chicken Little, who panics and runs around telling his friends that “the sky is falling!”  Today, the phrase “Chicken Little” is used to describe someone who is a constant worrier or pessimist, or who spreads alarm or baseless reports of danger.

Lately, a lot of Chicken Littles are running around warning us that the sky is falling.  These Chicken Littles are also known as Democrats.  Just turn on your television, check your social media feed, or talk to your Democrat friends and you will hear horrifying predictions of doom.

Their predictions brought to mind a Bible study that my dad taught a long time ago.  He was trying to show how unlikely it is that all of the prophecies in the Bible come true unless it really is God’s word.  In the New Years Bible study, he got December issues of tabloids that had psychics making predictions about the coming year.  Some said that we would make contact with aliens.  Others tried to predict who would win the World Series or guess celebrity gossip and scandals.  Then at the end of the year he would go back and see how accurate those psychics were as compared to the Bible’s perfect record.  Those predictions were predictably inaccurate.

My dad’s old Bible study was memorable and fun, and it inspired me to similarly test the doomsday prophecies we keep hearing from the left.  This will not only be interesting to watch, but being able to look at information and correctly predict what will happen in the future is important.  If Democrats are consistently wrong, we should not listen to them, and certainly should never vote for them.

Some of their predictions are just policy issues on which they disagree with President Trump.  That is not our main focus.  We are talking about the dire warnings that they pushed throughout the campaign, and still seem to be sticking to.  My guess is that these predictions are about as likely as the psychic predictions from the tabloids in the 90s.  Here are some of the Democrat prophecies that we keep hearing.

President Trump will change or void the Constitution and stay in office after this term. – Shortly after the election, President Trump made a joke about running for a third term.  Some Democrats, who do not understand jokes, have floated the idea that President Trump will try to remain in office after this term, and even introduced a resolution to clarify that the 22nd Amendment does not allow him to do so.  The alien contact predictions are far more likely than Donald Trump remaining in office after inauguration day in 2029.

President Trump will enact a national abortion ban. – Kamala Harris has made this prediction, as have many other Democrats.  Hopefully, this prediction does come true, but President Trump has said he will not.

President Trump is a racist who will persecute minorities. – This prediction is more difficult to define.  Searching through articles and videos, many claim that President Trump will take away the non-white citizens’ rights, but they do not give any examples of what rights are supposedly going away.  The only actual policy that keeps popping up is that President Trump thinks ethnic minorities are smart enough that they are capable of competing for hiring and college admission with whites without DEI policies to handicap the whites.  That is true.  Republicans do think more highly of minorities than Democrats do.  Since this prediction is so vague, the way we will decide if it has come true is if, in four years, whites have any rights that non-white citizens do not have.

President Trump is an “existential threat to democracy.” – We have heard this one too many times to count.  Determining the accuracy of this prophecy is extremely simple.  The Democrats have already told us that they never really believed this and were just lying to scare people, because they are already talking about how to win the next election.  Obviously, if an election occurs in 2028, democracy will have survived.  Not only that, but President Trump would like to strengthen the democratic process and restore faith in our elections by passing a nationwide voter ID requirement.

President Trump is Hitler.  Also known as – Trump is a fascist/dictator/authoritarian who will rule with an iron fist. – This one seems like a strange prediction, considering President Trump has already been the president for a full term and did not act in an authoritarian way.  It is highly doubtful that he will now, all of a sudden, want to act like a dictator.  By definition, a dictator uses his power to dictate (control) what citizens do with their lives, using the force of government.  President Trump, on the other hand, has actually made it a focus to cut regulations and eliminate government intrusion in our lives.  In fact, President Trump is having Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy try to get rid of full government departments, cut the number of government employees, and eliminate regulations and expenses.  In all fairness, he was the president during the most authoritarian time in American history.  However, he was not the perpetrator.  It was state governors who forced lockdowns, mask mandates, and pushed experimental vaccine mandates.  In fact, the Democrat criticism of Trump was that he should have been more authoritarian and taken away more liberties.  My guess is that President Trump will be far less dictatorial and authoritarian than the Democrats are.  If Democrats mean it when they say they fear authoritarian rule, they will help President Trump make government less influential in our lives.  They should vote for things like school choice, tax cuts, and eliminating government departments, employees, spending, and regulations.  My prediction is that their authoritarian tendencies will shine through and they will not.  We will see whose prediction is more accurate.

President Trump will use the military to attack political opponents and media members, or the “enemy from within.” – The Left made this prediction by twisting and combining two different statements by President Trump, so it seems unlikely to come true.  He has said that some terrible people are hurting our country more than foreign enemies.  He has called them “the enemy from within.”  He has mentioned fascists, Marxists, communists, Adam Schiff, Nancy Pelosi, and members of the media as being in that group.  He also spoke about possible unrest in the streets on election day by groups he called “radical left lunatics” (Presumably meaning groups like Antifa).  He said that the National Guard or the military should easily handle that.  Many on the left have turned that into a prediction that President Trump will unleash the military on the sets of “60 Minutes” and “The View,” or to throw Adam Schiff into prison at Guantanamo Bay.  As entertaining as all that would be, this is likely another prediction that will not happen.

President Trump will have the military bash down shop doors and drag away immigrants. – Joy Reid made this “prophecy” on November 26th, and several others have made similar predictions.  President Trump has said that he will crack down on illegal immigration and finish the wall.  He has also said that his first focus is on deporting criminals who are illegally in our country.  How likely are the predictions of military sweeps of city streets and storefronts to round up law-abiding immigrants to come true?  We shall see!

President Trump will cut Social Security. – A large billboard in Arizona made this claim, which the Harris campaign and the media echoed.  Contrarily, President Trump said that he would propose “no tax on social security.”

President Trump will weaponize the justice system and prosecute political opponents. – This prediction could go a couple of different ways.  We can again look back and see that he did not do this in his first term as president and assume that he will refrain from doing it again.  Yes, there were the “Lock her up” chants, but he obviously did not.  Hillary Clinton was ignored after 2016 and is still free.  This was, of course, before the Democrats actually did politically weaponize the justice system against their political opponents, and especially targeted President Trump himself.  President Trump has good reason to return the favor, and he very well may.  The other way he could react is to reform or dismantle the government mechanisms and agencies that were corruptly used to go after him and other Republicans.  He could gut the Justice Department and the FBI to try to prevent them from being used for political persecution again.  Only time will tell.

This is a solid group of predictions to test whether the left has any idea what they are talking about, or if they are just making up stuff to scare people.  I suppose there really is the possibility that they actually believe what they are saying, like Chicken Little did.  Either way, we will revisit these predictions in four years to see how accurate they were.  Hopefully, the sky is not falling.

Win With Class

“Turn it to MSNBC,” I said.  President Trump had pulled out to an insurmountable lead, and what better way to celebrate than to watch Rachel Maddow and her ilk come even more unhinged than they already were?  After seeing them saying awful things about good people for years, it is natural to want to see them lose it, and they did not disappoint, nor did Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers, or the ladies of The View.  They turned on each other, blaming people like Joe Biden and Barack Obama for Kamala Harris’s loss.  They made full frontal, nasty, slanderous attacks on the American people.  We were called bigots and misogynists and accused of wanting an authoritarian dictator in charge.  There were tears.  Lots of tears.  It was a complete meltdown.  Online, there was more insanity.  It was hilarious and enjoyable.

On the other side, the people who had supported President Trump were elated.  There was well-earned jubilation and happiness.  There was also a lot of gloating.  It made me think.  In my email, there was a reminder from a family member about what is truly important in this moment.  Part of it read, “It is imperative that followers of Christ be ever-mindful that we are to be salt and light in this troubled time in our nation.  We have a connection to our Heavenly Father that the world needs.”  While the temptation to gloat is understandable, we as conservatives need to restrain ourselves.  Our ultimate goal is to point people towards Jesus.  If we rub in our victory too much, it will turn off some people who might be open to Christianity and drive them away.  We need to be good winners.  To use a sports analogy, it is like watching the opposing team win the World Series and celebrate on your home field.  It is a terrible feeling, and only makes you want to beat them more the next year.  When it comes to God (or politics), we do not want them to hold a grudge like that.   We want them to join us.

This is also important for other practical reasons.  Our nation is still very divided.  We need to win people over permanently, or we will lose elections in the future.  The best way to change our government is to persuade people.  If people whose candidate lost see us rubbing salt in their wounds, they are unlikely to even entertain our ideas.

This does not mean we should not be joyful and excited.  We definitely should be.  This is a great triumph for our country.  It does not even mean that you cannot gloat to anybody, but you need to know which of your friends have a sense of humor and can take some playful ribbing.  It just means that we should try our best not to permanently close off others to our ideas, and especially to God.

While President Trump’s victory is a win for all law-abiding citizens in this country, almost half of the electorate does not see it that way.  They have bought into the media attacks on President Trump and half of America.  They are scared.  They have been told the lie that President Trump will be a fascist strongman who will rule with an iron fist.  Is this true?  Of course not.  We know it, but many of the people who were getting their news from ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, or any other far-left propaganda outlet believe it.  If you believed our country was being taken over by an authoritarian dictator, you would be pretty upset about it, too.

Fortunately, these negative expectations should actually make it easier for us to win people over.  Our side is so far from authoritarianism that it should quickly become obvious.  President Trump would be the first authoritarian dictator ever whose policies were designed to force you to have more freedom, keep us out of wars, and take less of our money.  In just about every area of life, President Trump’s policies are less intrusive than those of Democrats.  The Democrats claim that President Trump would be the dictator, while they are the party that mandates a million things that we cannot afford and do not need or want.  They forced people to close their businesses.  They mandated that we lock ourselves in our homes.  They closed down our churches.  They mandated we cover our faces and get experimental shots.  They are mandating electric cars that most people cannot afford.  They threaten you with fines if your health insurance is not acceptable to them.  They push mandatory gun buyback programs.  They force your daughters to play sports against biological boys.  They want to confiscate more of your hard-earned money.  The side claiming that President Trump will be an authoritarian is the same side that wants to control just about every aspect of your life.

There are, of course, people who have dug in so deep that nothing will convince them.  For those who are less radical and still have common sense, encourage them to turn off the network news and keep an open mind to some of what President Trump is likely to accomplish.  Do not let the mainstream media spin good news into bad.  If they are expecting authoritarianism, their fears will quickly be assuaged.

If we show people positive results without being obnoxious, they will start to see the light.  If they see that those positive results and our kindness are driven by our faith in God, then we can be salt and light to those who are angry, frightened, overwhelmed or disheartened, no matter their views or what side they are on. This should be our ultimate goal.
